history notes: The April 2011 tornado outbreak, remembered as the 2011 Super Outbreak, was one of the most catastrophic natural disasters in modern U.S. history, unfolding between April 25 and April 28, 2011, across 21 states from Texas to New York. Over the course of four days, the system produced a record 362 confirmed tornadoes, including several long-track EF4 and EF5 storms, causing widespread destruction and overwhelming emergency services. The deadliest day came on April 27, when more than 200 tornadoes struck the Southeast, devastating entire communities in Alabama, Mississippi, Tennessee, and Georgia; the EF4 that tore through Tuscaloosa and Birmingham and the EF5 that leveled Smithville, Mississippi, became infamous for their power and destruction. In total, 324 people were killed, thousands were injured, and damage exceeded $10 billion, leaving hundreds of thousands without homes or electricity and prompting major reforms in weather warning systems and disaster preparedness nationwide.
