background: King Boris III of Bulgaria died on August 28, 1943, at age 49, under mysterious circumstances that have sparked enduring speculation. After a tense August 14 meeting with Adolf Hitler in Rastenburg, where Boris refused demands to declare war on the Soviet Union and deport Bulgaria’s 50,000 Jews to death camps, he returned to Sofia and soon fell ill with symptoms including fever, rash, convulsions, and liver dysfunction. The official autopsy cited coronary thrombosis as the cause, but the timing—two weeks after clashing with Hitler—fueled theories of assassination, with suspicion falling on Nazi poisoning, Soviet NKVD involvement, or even Italian complicity via Princess Mafalda. Despite saving most Bulgarian Jews, Boris permitted the deportation of 11,000 from occupied territories, complicating his legacy. His death triggered political instability, leading to his six-year-old son Simeon II’s accession under a Regency Council, Bulgaria’s eventual communist takeover, and the monarchy’s abolition in 1946.
