history notes: On October 1, 1940, Albert Einstein officially became a U.S. citizen, taking the oath of allegiance at the federal courthouse in Trenton, New Jersey, alongside hundreds of other immigrants. Having fled Nazi Germany in 1933, Einstein had accepted a position at Princeton University’s Institute for Advanced Study, where he would remain for the rest of his career. By the time of his naturalization, Einstein was already one of the most renowned scientists in the world, celebrated for his theory of relativity and his groundbreaking contributions to modern physics. His decision to become an American was shaped both by his gratitude for the refuge the United States had provided him and by his increasing political involvement, particularly in warning of the dangers posed by fascism and advocating for humanitarian and democratic ideals.
