history notes: On January 12, 1946, the NFL approved the relocation of the Cleveland Rams to Los Angeles, marking a pivotal moment in professional football history as the Rams became the first NFL team to be based on the West Coast. Despite winning the 1945 NFL Championship, Rams owner Dan Reeves faced low attendance and looming competition from the newly formed All-America Football Conference’s Cleveland Browns, prompting the move to the more lucrative Los Angeles market. The relocation had major social and cultural implications: to play in the publicly owned Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, the Rams were required to integrate their team, leading to the historic signings of Kenny Washington and Woody Strode, the first African American players in the modern NFL era. This not only expanded the league geographically but also helped break the color barrier in professional football, predating Jackie Robinson’s integration of Major League Baseball by a year and marking the beginning of a new era for the NFL.
