AI notes: The Winter War began on November 30, 1939, when the Soviet Union launched a surprise invasion of Finland, just weeks after signing the Molotov–Ribbentrop Pact with Nazi Germany. The Soviets demanded territorial concessions from Finland, particularly on the Karelian Isthmus near Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), claiming security concerns, but Finland refused. Despite being vastly outnumbered and poorly equipped, the Finnish forces utilized their knowledge of the harsh winter terrain, guerrilla tactics, and high morale to inflict heavy losses on the Red Army. Battles such as those at Suomussalmi and the Mannerheim Line showcased Finnish resilience and tactical ingenuity. International sympathy grew for Finland, but material support was limited. After over three months of fierce fighting in brutal winter conditions, Finland was forced to sign the Moscow Peace Treaty on March 13, 1940, ceding about 11% of its territory but retaining its sovereignty. The war exposed severe weaknesses in the Soviet military and contributed to changes in Soviet command, while Finland’s fierce resistance won global admiration despite its territorial losses.
