background: Thomas’s Massachusetts Spy; or, the Worcester Gazette was a fiercely patriotic newspaper founded by Isaiah Thomas in 1770 and became one of the most influential publications during the American Revolutionary era. Initially printed in Boston, the paper took a radical stance against British rule, using sharp editorials, eyewitness accounts, and political satire to stir revolutionary sentiment among the colonists. As tensions escalated in 1775, and fearing British suppression, Thomas secretly moved his press to Worcester just days before the battles of Lexington and Concord—an act that underscored both the danger and importance of the colonial press. From its new location, the Spy continued to advocate for independence, becoming a vital voice for the Patriot cause and a symbol of press freedom. Thomas himself would later be recognized not only as a printer but as an early American historian and founder of the American Antiquarian Society, preserving the very history he helped shape through the power of the printed word.
