history notes: In February of 1993, a powerful truck bomb exploded in the underground parking garage beneath the North Tower of the World Trade Center in New York City, killing six people and injuring over 1,000 others. The 1,200-pound urea nitrate–hydrogen gas-enhanced device was intended to collapse the North Tower into the South Tower, bringing down both buildings and causing mass casualties, though the plan ultimately failed to achieve that scale of destruction. The attack was orchestrated by a group of Islamist extremists led by Ramzi Yousef, who was later captured in Pakistan in 1995. The bombing caused massive structural damage, filled the towers with smoke, and led to the evacuation of tens of thousands of people. It exposed serious security vulnerabilities and marked the beginning of a new era of terrorism on U.S. soil, foreshadowing the more devastating September 11, 2001 attacks. The perpetrators were tracked down by the FBI and eventually convicted, but the attack served as a stark warning of the growing threat of international terrorism.
