background: On September 8, 1939, Warsaw was under immense strain as the German invasion of Poland pressed inexorably toward the capital. The city, already crowded with refugees fleeing from the rapidly advancing Wehrmacht, faced constant aerial bombardment and artillery shelling, which damaged buildings, started fires, and caused civilian casualties. Polish forces were hastily organizing defenses, setting up barricades, and preparing for street fighting, while military units outside the city attempted to slow the German advance. Civilians were drafted into civil defense efforts, helping to reinforce fortifications, transport the wounded, and maintain order amid growing panic. Communications and essential services were increasingly disrupted, and food and medical supplies were dwindling. The tension and fear in the streets reflected the broader crisis facing Poland, as Warsaw braced for what would become the month-long siege that culminated in the city’s surrender later that month.
