background: The Spirit of the Times was a New York weekly newspaper published in the 19th century, founded by William T. Porter and James Haw. Originally focused on horse racing, the paper quickly expanded to cover a wide array of sports, including boxing, baseball, rowing, yachting, and later football and speed skating, as well as theatrical performances and aspects of rural life. It played a pioneering role in American sports journalism, standardizing horse racing statistics and influencing track management practices, while appealing to an upper-class readership interested in both athletics and cultural affairs. After Porter's death in 1858, the paper declined but was revitalized under George Wilkes in 1868, who emphasized amateur sports, and later under William B. Curtis until its closure in 1892. Today, The Spirit of the Times is recognized for its historical significance, offering insight into 19th-century American sports, leisure, and society.
