history notes: Fiorello H. La Guardia, the dynamic and reformist mayor of New York City, died on September 20, 1947, at the age of 64, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. Widely regarded as one of the most influential mayors in American history, La Guardia served three consecutive terms from 1934 to 1945, leading the city through the Great Depression and World War II with a fierce commitment to good governance, social justice, and public service. A Republican with strong progressive ideals, he was known for his passionate opposition to political corruption, his support for labor unions and immigrant communities, and his hands-on leadership style that brought tangible improvements in infrastructure, housing, and social welfare. Nicknamed "the Little Flower," a reference to both his short stature and the meaning of his Italian first name, La Guardia was beloved for his charismatic personality and deep empathy for ordinary New Yorkers. After leaving office, he continued his public service briefly as the head of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration, but his declining health soon ended his work. His death marked the end of an era in New York City politics, and he was mourned as a tireless advocate for the people and a symbol of integrity in public office.
