history notes: On September 30, 1968, the Green Beret camp at Thường Đức, manned by Detachment A-109 of the 5th Special Forces Group and their Civilian Irregular Defense Group (CIDG) allies, came under intense siege by the North Vietnamese Army (PAVN), specifically elements of the 2nd Division and the 21st Regiment. In the days leading up to the climax of the assault, the PAVN had already overrun several outposts surrounding the camp and gained control of parts of the nearby village, using coordinated artillery, mortar, and rocket fire to weaken defenses. By the 30th, the defenders were at risk of being overrun entirely, but a combination of determined resistance and timely air support proved decisive. U.S. Marine A-6 Intruder bombers and USAF AC-47 "Spooky" gunships delivered precise and overwhelming firepower, guided by radar and air reconnaissance, targeting enemy positions in the surrounding high ground. These airstrikes not only blunted the enemy’s momentum but also pushed them back from key positions. Despite the ferocity of the attack and the strategic pressure applied by the PAVN, the defenders held the camp, setting the stage for a larger relief operation—Operation Maui Peak—which began days later to secure the area and restore control. The battle demonstrated the effectiveness of integrated air-ground coordination and the resilience of Special Forces-led units under siege.
