history notes: On April 1, 1933, the Nazi regime launched a nationwide boycott of Jewish businesses, professionals, and institutions in Germany, marking the first organized, state-sponsored action against Jews under Adolf Hitler's rule. Orchestrated by Joseph Goebbels and enforced by Nazi stormtroopers (SA), the boycott was portrayed as retaliation against alleged anti-German propaganda spread by Jews abroad. SA members stood outside Jewish shops, painted yellow Stars of David on windows, and held signs urging Germans not to buy from Jews, while Jewish doctors, lawyers, and other professionals were similarly targeted. Though the boycott lasted officially for only one day and received mixed public support, it signaled the beginning of the Nazi regime’s systematic persecution of Jews. It also set a precedent for the exclusionary laws and escalating anti-Semitic policies that followed, ultimately leading to the Holocaust. This event revealed how the Nazis would use state power, propaganda, and intimidation to isolate Jews socially and economically, testing the waters of public and international reaction.
