Item # 718507

September 20, 1942

MINNEAPOLIS SUNDAY TRIBUNE, September 20, 1942

* USS Aircraft Carrier Yorktown sinking
* Battle of Midway aftermath
* World War II - WWII

The front page has a two column heading: "The Order Was 'Abandon Ship'" with lead-in: "Officer Tells of Yorktown's Last 60 Hours Afloat" and subhead. (see images) Lengthy report continues on page 4.
This sinking actually happened a few months earlier but this was when it was 1st made public making it still a first report.
Complete with 50+ pages, light toning and minor wear at the margins, some small binding holes along the spine, a few small ink notations within, generally very nice.

AI notes: Irving Day Wiltsie, serving as the gunnery officer aboard the USS Yorktown in 1942, was known for his calm leadership during the fierce Battle of Midway. Eyewitnesses recall him directing the ship’s anti-aircraft defenses with steady resolve amid relentless Japanese air attacks, even as the Yorktown sustained critical damage. His commitment to duty and bravery inspired the crew until he was killed during the battle, embodying the courage and sacrifice that marked the carrier’s valiant stand in one of World War II’s most pivotal naval engagements.
