SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE--EXTRA, June 19, 1945  The bold front page headline announces: "GEN. BUCKNER IS KILLED IN ACTION ON OKINAWA".
General Simon Buckner, Jr. was killed during the closing days of the Battle of Okinawa by enemy artillery fire, making him the highest-ranking United States military officer lost to enemy fire during World War II. He would remain the highest-ranking U.S. military member to be killed by a foreign armed action until the death of Lieut. General Timothy Maude during the September 11 attacks.
Also on the front page is a photo showing President Truman decorating General Eisenhower with the Distinguished Service Medal, upon his arrival in Washington, D.C.
 Complete in 8 pages as an "Extra" edition, nice condition.
