Livingstone's exploration of Africa...

Item # 718159

August 27, 1872

NEW YORK HERALD, Aug. 27, 1872  James Gorden Bennett, this newspaper's publisher, capitalized on the 19th century fascination with Africa & the whereabouts of explorer Dr. David Livingstone by hiring journalist Henry Stanley to search for him. Livingstone had ventured to Africa in 1865 for a 2 year expedition with little heard from him since.
So it is of no surprise that the Herald offered extraordinary coverage of the adventures of Stanley and Livingstone in Africa.
Page 3 is mostly taken up with a large facsimile of a Livingstone letter headed: "LIVINGSTONE'S SIGN MANUAL. Fac Simile of Doctor David Livingstone's Letter of Thanks to the New York Herald." There had been doubts by many whether Livingstone was, in fact, alive.
The balance of the page is taken up with a great wealth of reporting on the adventures of Livingstone in Africa. Some additional reporting on page  4 as well.
Complete in 12 pages, very nice condition.
