Page 59 has a 7 1/2 x 6 1/2 inch advertisement for the opening day premiere of "SHANGHAI SURPRISE" in New York City.
Madonna's main residence at the time was in East Village, Manhattan which is right next door to Greenwich Village, so this publication was probably the closest to where she was living at the time. It is also documented that she used the Village Voice newspaper to find employment and housing during her early days in New York City. Rare as such.
AI notes: Madonna starred in the 1986 film Shanghai Surprise alongside her then-husband Sean Penn. The movie, set in 1938 Shanghai, follows a missionary (played by Madonna) and a con man (Penn) searching for a hidden stash of opium for medical use. Produced by George Harrison, the film was widely panned by critics and became a box office flop. Despite the real-life celebrity couple's star power, the movie was criticized for poor acting, lack of chemistry, and a weak plot. It remains a notable misstep in Madonna’s early entertainment career.
I suspect this to be an extremely rare item because their was really no reason to save it at the time.
The Village Voice was an American counterculture newspaper known for being the country's first alternative newsweekly. It introduced free-form, high-spirited, and passionate journalism into the public discourse - a tradition it maintained throughout its 60+ year history. It is quite common to find great political cartoons, satirical cartoons and articles, thought-provoking editorials, and ads and reviews for both concerts and theater productions - both on and off Broadway. Many iconic writers and musicians credit their appearance in The Village Voice for at least a portion of their success.
Complete with 148 pages, tabloid size, one fold along the center, very nice condition.

Provenance note: This issue comes from The Village Voice's own archives, part of their in-house collection used to create their digital archive. Rare as such.
