Page 19 has a nice full page advertisement for the upcoming "AIDS WALK" in Manhattan. Interesting this ad has a misprint as the date is one day off. It actually took place on the 18th. And the Village Voice was one of the main sponsors for this historic walk.
background: The 1986 New York City AIDS Walk, held on May 18, 1986 marked a significant growth in public support for the fight against AIDS. Organized by Gay Men’s Health Crisis (GMHC), the walk drew approximately 16,000 participants and raised around $1.6 million, doubling the fundraising total from the inaugural 1985 event. The route covered several miles through Manhattan, and the event combined activism, solidarity, and public education at a time when AIDS was still highly stigmatized and misunderstood. The success of the 1986 walk helped solidify the AIDS Walk as an important annual fundraiser and awareness campaign.
I suspect this to be an extremely rare item because their was really no reason to save it at the time.
The Village Voice was an American counterculture newspaper known for being the country's first alternative newsweekly. It introduced free-form, high-spirited, and passionate journalism into the public discourse - a tradition it maintained throughout its 60+ year history. It is quite common to find great political cartoons, satirical cartoons and articles, thought-provoking editorials, and ads and reviews for both concerts and theater productions - both on and off Broadway. Many iconic writers and musicians credit their appearance in The Village Voice for at least a portion of their success.
Complete with 144 pages, tabloid size, one fold along the center, nice condition.
