AI notes: On November 16, 1939, Al Capone was released from federal custody after serving over seven years of an 11-year sentence for tax evasion. His health had severely declined in prison due to neurosyphilis, leaving him mentally and physically debilitated. Capone had served time at Atlanta Penitentiary and Alcatraz before being transferred to Terminal Island and eventually paroled. Following his release, he retired to his Palm Island estate in Florida, where he lived quietly until his death in 1947.
