background: The 1935 Mauna Loa eruption began on November 21, 1935, on the northeast rift zone of the volcano on the Big Island of Hawaii. The lava flows quickly advanced downslope toward the city of Hilo, threatening homes and infrastructure. In a dramatic and historic attempt to divert the lava, the U.S. Army Air Corps conducted aerial bombing missions on December 27, 1935, under the guidance of volcanologist Thomas A. Jaggar, founder of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. The bombings targeted lava tubes and channels to disrupt the flow and slow its progress. While the effectiveness of the effort remains debated, the lava eventually stopped short of Hilo, and the eruption ended in early January 1936. This event marked one of the earliest attempts at human intervention in a volcanic eruption.
