THE VILLAGE VOICE (weekly), Greenwich Village, New York City, Nov 20, 1984
* Early MADONNA photo in social media
* Singer - songwriter - actress - model
* First week of her "Like a Virgin" album release
* Unknown photo ? on set of her music video
Within this issue is a special "Fashion Supplement" with the cover containing a photo of a young Madonna (page 71) taken on set of her "Like a Virgin" music video. I searched online for photos of her during this iconic time and cannot find this particular image anywhere. Was this a long lost photo of her that appeared in this local publication only ? This album was released just a few days earlier.
AI notes: The November 20, 1984 issue of The Village Voice featured Madonna during the promotional peak of her Like a Virgin album, released just days earlier. While the exact photo from that issue isn't widely available online, it likely showcased imagery from her iconic photo shoots—especially the well-known Steven Meisel portrait of Madonna in a white lace wedding dress. These photos, central to her bold and provocative image, were widely used in press and promotional materials throughout the era.
I suspect this to be an extremely rare item because their was really no reason to save it at the time.
The Village Voice was an American counterculture newspaper known for being the country's first alternative newsweekly. It introduced free-form, high-spirited, and passionate journalism into the public discourse - a tradition it maintained throughout its 60+ year history. It is quite common to find great political cartoons, satirical cartoons and articles, thought-provoking editorials, and ads and reviews for both concerts and theater productions - both on and off Broadway. Many iconic writers and musicians credit their appearance in The Village Voice for at least a portion of their success.
Complete with 160 pages, tabloid size, one fold along the center, very nice condition.
Provenance note: This issue comes from The Village Voice's own archives, part of their in-house collection used to create their digital archive. Rare as such.
Alert: Many issues of The Village Voice contain articles and/or photos which some consider offensive, and are certainly inappropriate for children. Please purchase with discretion.
