background: In 1934, Henri Rochette, a notorious French financier previously convicted of large-scale fraud, died by suicide during a court hearing in Paris. Facing new charges for continued financial misconduct, Rochette smuggled a razor blade into the courtroom and dramatically cut his own throat as proceedings began. Despite efforts to save him, he died shortly after the act. His death shocked the public and brought a grim end to one of France’s most infamous financial scandals.
