On John Brown's raid... Gerritt Smith insane... Frederick Douglass mention...

Item # 716541

November 10, 1859

NEW YORK TRIBUNE, Nov. 10, 1859  There are various reports concerning the John Brown slave insurrection at Harper's Ferry, including; "Confession of Cook" "The Virginia Insurrection" & "John Brown's Colored Refugees In Canada".
There are also two brief, interesting items, one headed: "Gerrit Smith Insane" noting: "Gerrit Smith is now confined in the State Lunatic Asylum...He was brought here by his relatives on Monday, and is seriously deranged." as is confirmed by his Wikipedia page. The other briefly notes: "Fred. Douglass was in town yesterday." with a Toronto dateline.
Eight pages, rather irregular at the spine with a bit of text loss, text loss to page 3 due to close-trimming not affecting any mentioned reports.

Item from our most recent catalog - #356, released for July, 2025

(Added to Catalog #356 after the hardcopy was released - only available on-line.)
