1903 Evansville, Indiana race riot...

Item # 716219

July 08, 1903

THE EVENING TRIBUNE, San Diego, July 8, 1903

* Evansville race riot - Indiana
* African Americans - Negroes

The top of the front page has a one column heading: "TROOPS CONTROL ION EVANSVILLE" with subheads. (see images) Surprisingly this issue is in good condition being from the "wood pulp" era. Very hard to find issues that are not totally fragile from this era in paper.
Complete with 6 pages, two small library stamps within the masthead, a few tiny binding holes along the spine, generally very nice.

AI notes: The 1903 Evansville riot was a deadly racial conflict in Evansville, Indiana, sparked by the arrest of Lee Brown, a Black man accused of killing a white police officer. When a white mob attempted to lynch Brown, local authorities refused and fortified the jail, leading to a violent clash between the mob and militia. Over July 5–6, at least 11 people were killed and dozens injured in one of Indiana’s deadliest racial riots. The event highlighted the intense racial tensions and mob violence of the Jim Crow era, drawing national attention and prompting a military response to restore order.
