Reacting to the Tariff of 1828: the "Tariff of Abominations"...
Item # 715758
January 03, 1829
NILES' WEEKLY REGISTER, Baltimore, Jan. 3, 1829 Inside has: "the American Tariff" which is a British reaction to the Tariff Act of 1828, often referred to as the "Tariff of Abominations".
These reflections carry over to the following page. Then further on are several pages taken up with: "South Carolina Legislature" detailing their hatred of the tariff. Included is a "Resolve" noting in part: "That we will vindicate the federal constitution, and will no longer suffer what was established for our security to be perverted to our destruction; that our liberties are endangered by mournful progress of events..." with more.
Another "Resolve' begins: "That it is expedient to make our solemn protest against the unconstitutionality & oppressive operation of the system of protecting duties..." with much more, including many more 'Resolves" proposed. This coverage from South Carolina's reaction takes several pages.
This 1828 Tariff was particularly harmful to the Southern economy, hence the lengthy reaction by South Carolina.
Sixteen pages, 6 by 9 1/4 inches, discrete archival mends to pages 1 and 2, good condition.
As noted in Wikipedia, this title: "...(was) one of the most widely-circulated magazines in the United States...Devoted primarily to politics...considered an important source for the history of the period."
