Item # 714434

March 06, 1937

CHICAGO DAILY TRIBUNE, March 6, 1937

* United States apologizes to Adolph Hitler  & the Third Reich
* Mayor Fiorello La Guardia insults Hitler calling him a "brown-shirted fanatic"
* U.S. Secretary of State Cordell Hull makes apology for remarks

The front page has a one column heading: "DENOUNCES U. S. CIVILIZATION FOR 'SLUR' AT HITLER" with subheads. (see images) Coverage continues on page 4 with another related report headed: "U. S. APOLOGIZES TO GERMANY FOR SLUR ON HITLER" with subhead. Interesting report here when the United States apologized to probably the most ruthless dictators of all time.
Complete with all 38 pages, rag edition in very nice condition. A few small binding holes along the spine.

Note: On March 6, 1937, U.S. Secretary of State Cordell Hull apologized to the German Embassy for the insulting remarks about Adolf Hitler made by New York City Mayor Fiorello La Guardia three days earlier. La Guardia, speaking on March 3 to the Women’s Division of the American Jewish Congress, had proposed building a “chamber of horrors” at the 1939 World’s Fair in New York. Hizzoner suggested that the pavilion have, “as a climax … a figure of that brown-shirted fanatic who is now menacing the peace of the world.”
