Extra time off needed to recover from Washington's Birthday celebrations....
Item # 712633
February 20, 1885
THE NEW YORK TIMES, Feb. 20, 1885
* Washington's Birthday goes Federal (a holiday for all)
* Extra time off needed for members of the NY Senate?
Page 5 has a single column heading which includes: "A Washington's Birthday Holiday". which is in reference to the members' of the New York State Senate desiring to have enough time off to recover from the holiday, which was for the first time to be a "holiday for all". A brief paragraph states: "The assemblymen are desirous of celebrating Washington’s Birthday and of securing the guarantee of time sufficient to recover from the effect thereof. General Husted moved that an adjournment be taken, when the session closes tomorrow, noon, until next Tuesday night. His resolution was adopted, and being concurrent it will be considered and passed by the Senate tomorrow."
Note: Whereas this was the first time the celebration would be celebrated as a Federal Holiday (i.e., a holiday for all), it is hard to not miss the humor in elected officials to vote themselves significantly more time off than the general populace. By the way, the bill did pass.
Other news of the day with period advertising is found throughout.
Complete in 8 pages, with even toning and small margin/edge tears. It is quite brittle and must be handled with care. However, for the era, it is in nice condition.
