The Constitution victorious over the Java...
Item # 710791
March 02, 1813
THE WAR, New York, March 2, 1813 The entire front page & a bit of page 2 are taken up with reports on the naval battle between the Constitution and the Java, beginning with: "Official Documents - Commodore Bainbridge to the Secretary of the Navy--U.S. Frigate Constitution" signed in type: W. Bainbridge. This is followed by additional details & reports including the: "List of Killed & Wounded..." on both ships.
Other reports inside include: "The Naval Victory" "The Late Battle which concerns the Battle of Frenchtown, with much detail, taking close to half a page. Also: "Summary - Gen. Harrison's Army" "Successful Privateering" "Blockade of the Chesapeake", and the back page having two letters written on board the "U. S. Frigate Constellation".
Four pages, 9 by 11 1/4 inches, very nice condition.
This is a fascinating, short-lived newspaper, having begun in 1812 with the exclusive purpose of reporting on the War of 1812 (hence the title). When the war ended, so did this newspaper.
