A wonderful issue has almost the entire front page is taken up with reports on the War of 1812.
Included are: "British Official Account of the Capture of Washington" which is very detailed and takes most of the front page with several subheads and letters. Also of significance is a full column on: "British Account of the Capture of Castine" which is in Maine. And then page 2 begins with: "Additional British Official Account of the Capture of Castine" with additiona war accounts as well.
Four pages, nice condition.
background: The Columbian Centinel’s detailed reprinting of the British accounts reflects a period of profound vulnerability for the American psyche, as the "Official Account of the Capture of Washington" vividly detailed the systematic destruction of the capital’s public buildings—an event the British described with a clinical, almost triumphalist efficiency. For Bostonian readers, seeing the burning of the White House and Capitol through the eyes of the invaders was a visceral reminder of the federal government’s inability to protect its own seat of power. This humiliation was compounded by the reporting on the Occupation of Castine, where the British had effectively severed eastern Maine from Massachusetts to establish a strategic military base. By dedicating nearly the entire front page to these setbacks, the Centinel—a paper known for its sharp opposition to the war—wasn't just reporting news; it was making a damning visual argument against the Madison administration’s "Mr. Madison's War," showcasing a nation under siege from both the south and its own northern doorstep.
