ROCKY MOUNTAIN NEWS, Denver, Colorado, Jan. 18, 1881 This was Colorado's first newspaper, having begun in 1859, its first issue appearing 20 minutes ahead of its competitor, the 'Cherry Creek Pioneer'. During the 1870's with the arrival of the railroad & discovery of silver Denver's population boomed from 4,759 in 1870 to over 35,000 in 1880. This issue was printed just 5 years after statehood.
