A 'classic' Wild West stagecoach robbery...
Item # 705613
February 06, 1877
THE SAN DIEGO UNION, California, Feb. 6, 1877
* Old West publication
* Arizona crime
Among the front page articles is: "Arizona" "Robbery of the California and Arizona Stage--The Robbers captured and Property Recovered". And this is followed by another report: "Later--Indignation Against the Robbers".
Four pages, small binding holes at the blank spine, generally good condition with some minor archival mends at margins. A bit fragile so should be handled carefully.
AI notes: On January 4, 1877, while rounding Woolsey Hill in Yavapai County, Arizona Territory, a stagecoach carrying a mail bag and an express box was ambushed by two masked men: one halted the coach by stretching a rope across the road, and the other ordered the driver, Jesus Lujan, and mail guard J. H. Evans off the stage, allowing the passengers to remain. The robbers then rifled through the vehicle, found no weapons, seized both the mail bag and the express box, broke open the latter, and made off with its contents — before forcing the driver to resume the journey.
