NILES' WEEKLY REGISTER, Baltimore,  December 27, 1817

* Pirate Jean Lafitte
* Galveston, Texas
* Gulf of Mexico

Certainly the best report in this issue is headed: "Of Galveston" which is about--among other items concerning Galveston, Texas--the noted pirate Lafitte. Part of the text includes: "...Galvezton is a small island or sand bar situate in the bay of St. Barnard on the coast of Texas...Among the most conspicuous characters who happened to be then at Galveston were many of the notorious offenders against our laws...among whom the Lafittes may be classed foremost & most actively engaged in the Galvezton trade..." with more.
Sixteen pages, 6 1/4 by 9 3/4 inches and in very nice condition.

AI notes: In 1817, the notorious French pirate Jean Lafitte was active along the Gulf Coast, and one of his notable bases of operation included Galveston, Texas. At that time, Galveston—then a sparsely populated barrier island—served as an ideal hideout for Lafitte and his band of privateers and smugglers. Using the island as a staging ground, Lafitte engaged in smuggling goods such as sugar, tobacco, and weapons, often evading Spanish, Mexican, and American authorities. He cultivated a network of loyal followers and became a local power broker, providing protection to merchants in exchange for a share of profits. Lafitte’s presence in Galveston helped establish the island as a hub for piracy in the Gulf of Mexico, setting the stage for his later operations in Louisiana and his famous involvement in the War of 1812.

As noted in Wikipedia, this title: "...(was) one of the most widely-circulated magazines in the United States...Devoted primarily to politics...considered an important source for the history of the period."
