Front page Act of Congress by George Washington...

Item # 705137

May 08, 1790

GAZETTE OF THE UNITED STATES, New York, May 8, 1790

* President George Washington
* Act of United States Congress
* John Adams & Thomas Jefferson

Half of the front page is taken up with: "An ACT for Regulating the Military Establishment of the United States" signed in type by John Adams, Thomas Jefferson, and George Washington as President. The act is headed with a nice engraving of a heraldic eagle making this a great front page for display. The balance of the front page has reporting from Congress which carries over to take all of page 2. Page 3 has a brief item noting: "Married:...Tobias Lear, Esq. Secretary to the President of the United States; to Miss Polly Long...".
Four pages, a few ink stains to the front page, nice condition.

AI notes: The January 4, 1790 Act of Congress required all federal officials, including military officers, to take an oath to support the U.S. Constitution. It established the official process and timing for administering these oaths, helping enforce national loyalty and implement Article VI of the Constitution. This was one of the earliest laws binding U.S. military personnel to the new federal government.

Considered by many as the most significant newspaper of the 18th century, particularly during this, one of the formative years of the new federal government, as the Gazette was the mouthpiece of all matters political. Most pronouncements from Congress & the President were printed first in this newspaper.
