August 16, 1794

COLUMBIAN CENTINEL, Boston, Aug. 16, 1794  This issue has content relating to the Whiskey Rebellion in Western Pennsylvania. This was a tax protest by farmers who sold their grain in the form of whiskey. The Whiskey Rebellion demonstrated that the new national government had the willingness and ability to suppress violent resistance to its laws.
This is a particularly significant issue as page 2 has the "Proclamation" signed in type by the President: Go. Washington, in which he directs the insurgents to return to their homes and at the same time called out a combined Virginia, Maryland, New Jersey and Pennsylvania 12,900 man militia force to put down the insurrection. This is followed by another "Proclamation" by the governor of Pennsylvania, it also relating to the Whiskey Rebellion.
A very significant issue & great to have both notable Proclamations in the same issue.
Four pages, never bound nor trimmed, minor foxing at the bottom margin of page 1, great condition.
