Stonewall Riots 1969 Protest Parade... Greenwich Village...

Item # 703411

July 31, 1969

THE VILLAGE VOICE, Greenwich Village, New York, July 31, 1969

* Stonewall Rioters anti-police protest march
* Considered by many to be the first Gay Pride Parade
* Washington Square to the Stonewall Inn
* Woodstock music festival bus trip advertisement

The front page has first report coverage on the protest parade which occurred in Greenwich Village (Washington Square to the Stonewall Inn) in protest to the raid on the Stonewall Inn which took place a month prior (known as the Stonewall Riots). This parade is considered to be the first of what are now referred to as Pride Parades which are currently held throughout the world. The article is headed: "Gay Power Hits Back" with a related photo and continues on inside pages. Nice to have this historic coverage in the iconic newspaper from where the riots and parade took place. Probable only reported in this publication. I suspect this to be an extremely rare item because their was really no reason to save it at the time.
Also present are ads for a bus trip to Woodstock and for the musical "Hair". See images for details.
It is worth noting that "The Village Voice" was an American news and culture paper, known for being the country's first alternative newsweekly. Founded in 1955, the Voice began as a platform for the creative community of New York City.
Fifty-six pages pages, two small cutouts on two unrelated inside pages, tabloid-size, one crease across the center, generally in very nice condition.

Provenance note: This issue comes from The Village Voice's own archives, part of their in-house collection used to create their digital archive. Rare as such.
