First report on the assassination of Lincoln...

Item # 701929

April 20, 1865

CHARLESTON COURIER, South Carolina, April 20, 1865

* Abraham Lincoln assassination (historic 1st report)
* From the origin of the American Civil War (rare)

Keep in mind that Charleston fell to Union forces on February 18 and after that date was in Union control. So this is the volume 1, number 47 issue in the "new series" as noted.
Availability of paper must still have been a concern, for as can be seen in the photos the dimensions of the paper are larger than the print area, resulting in a very wide bottom margin.
This is almost certainly the first report on details of the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, although 5 days after reports in Northern paper. This is partially explained in a page 2 report: "The startling & sad news of the assassination and death of Abraham Lincoln...brought by the stream ship 'Fulton', received here yesterday morning, produced a thrill of horror & indignation to the community..." with more. It is likely telegraph lines had been destroyed & rail lines disrupted which would have allowed for a more timely report.
A page 2 report notes: "The intelligence which we place before our readers to-day, of the assassination of President Lincoln...is without parallel...The rejoicing of the people...at the near approach of peace are now turned into mourning..." followed by nice detail on how the assassination happened.
The front page reports are as though found in the Northern papers, including: "IMPORTANT" "Assassination of President Lincoln" "The President Shot At Ford's Theatre" "Escape Of The Assassin" "Death of the President" "Scene at the Deathbed of Mr. Lincoln" "J. Wilkes Booth, the Actor, The Alleged assassin of the President' with more.
Four pages, never bound nor trimmed, a few small archival mends, nice condition.
