Very unusual newspaper: printed on transparent newsprint...

Item # 701924

February 10, 1863

THE 'TEXAS ALMANAC'--EXTRA, Austin, Feb. 10, 1863

* Extremely rare Southwest publication
* American Civil War era

 This newspaper appears to have existed from October, 1862 thru June, 1863. This is the volume 1, number 53 issue.
This is one of the more unusual we have encountered. It is a single sheet issue printed on "onion-skin" newsprint. The paper is extremely thin, thinner than tissue paper, and does resemble the outer layers of an onion. It is so thin that it is transparent, and easily as readable from the reverse as from the obverse (although backwards). So it obviously could only be printed on one side.
Measures 12 by 14 3/4 inches, a few very small wear holes, still in very nice condition.

Item from Catalog 352 (released for March 2025)
