AI notes: Kline’s Carlisle Weekly Gazette was a prominent weekly newspaper published in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, from around 1794 to 1817 under the ownership and editorship of George Kline. The paper emerged from earlier local titles, including The Carlisle Gazette, and the Western Repository of Knowledge, and quickly became a key source of news and information for south‑central Pennsylvania. It covered a wide array of topics, including local events, political commentary, official government proclamations, and national news, reflecting the concerns of a young United States navigating post‑Revolutionary challenges such as federal taxation, the Whiskey Rebellion, and the growth of political parties. The newspaper underwent minor title adjustments, most notably becoming Kline’s Weekly Carlisle Gazette around 1810, before eventually merging with other local publications in 1817. Today, its surviving issues are valued by historians for providing insight into early American social, political, and community life, and they are preserved in collections at institutions such as the State Library of Pennsylvania and the American Antiquarian Society.
