Very rare "camp" newspaper from the near beginning of the Civil War...

Item # 701669

July 04, 1861

THE NATIONAL GUARD, Camp Pennsylvania, Baltimore, July 4, 1861

* Very rare Union Civil War camp publication
* 19th Pennsylvania Infantry Regiment

A very rare "camp" newspaper from the early months of the Civil War. Although it began in July, 1856 printed at Camp McLellan, Lancaster, Pa., it was resurrected in early 1861 at its new location, hence the "vol. 2 no. 3" noted in the masthead, just the third issue at the new location.
Typical of camp newspapers it is of small size as they used a small printing press appropriately portable to travel with the regiments during the war. This is the: "4th of July Extra--Pictorial Edition" as noted at the very top of the front page. And illustrated it is. The front page has a print captioned: "Principal Occupation of 'Home Guard--The Girls we Left Behind Us"; page 2 is filled with  5 cartoonish prints; page 3 has a print; "The Bender Guards" with some detail; page 4 has 2 prints; page 5 is taken upon with 4 prints as are pages 6 and 7. Even the back page is mostly taken up with a print titled; "The Returned Volunteer".
Eight pages, 5 3/4 by 10 inches, never bound nor trimmed, very nice condition.
