Note: The Battle of Lake Erie, fought on September 10, 1813, during the War of 1812, was a major American naval victory led by Oliver Hazard Perry against the British fleet commanded by Robert Heriot Barclay. Taking place near Put-in-Bay, Ohio, the battle secured U.S. control of Lake Erie. Despite initial setbacks and heavy damage to his flagship, Perry famously transferred to the USS Niagara, regrouped, and forced the British to surrender. His victory message—“We have met the enemy and they are ours”—became iconic. The triumph enabled the recapture of Detroit, boosted American morale, and paved the way for the U.S. victory at the Battle of the Thames.
