AI notes: On April 19, 1875, the United States marked the centennial of the Battles of Lexington and Concord, commemorating the momentous events of April 19, 1775, that ignited the American Revolutionary War. These battles, famously remembered for "the shot heard ’round the world," symbolized the colonists’ first armed resistance against British rule. The 100th anniversary was observed with great national pride, particularly in Massachusetts, where grand ceremonies took place in Lexington, Concord, and Boston. Thousands gathered, including President Ulysses S. Grant and other prominent figures, to honor the courage and sacrifice of the colonial militias. Parades, historical reenactments, speeches, and dedications celebrated not only the military engagements but also a century of American independence, unity, and democratic ideals. Coming just a decade after the Civil War, the centennial served to rekindle patriotic spirit and remind citizens of the shared struggles that had shaped the nation.
