Item # 701437

June 28, 1973

THE VILLAGE VOICE, Greenwich Village, New York, June 28, 1973

* Christopher Street Parade - Bette Midler
* 3rd Gay pride march - Washington Square

* Grateful Dead concert in Jersey City NJ
* Roosevelt Stadium performance advertisement
* Jerry Garcia - Bob Weir - Ron "Pigpen" McKernan

The front page has five related photos with heading: "Hostility comes out of the closet" which was the Christopher Street Parade and just the 3rd ever gay pride parade. Bette Midler made a surprise appearance during this event at Washington Square.
Page 51 has a nice full page advertisement for "The Grateful Dead & The Band" for there performance at Roosevelt Stadium in Jersey City, New Jersey. (see images) I suspect this to be an extremely rare item because their was really no reason to save it at the time.
It is worth noting that "The Village Voice" was an American news and culture paper, known for being the country's first alternative newsweekly. Founded in 1955, the Voice began as a platform for the creative community of New York City.
Other interesting items from the counter-culture era. Complete in 104 pages, tabloid-size, one crease across the center, a little margin wear, generally very nice.

Provenance note: This issue comes from The Village Voice's own archives, part of their in-house collection used to create their digital archive.

Alert: Many issues of The Village Voice contain articles and/or photos which some consider offensive, and are certainly inappropriate for children. Please purchase with discretion.
