background: On November 17, 1875, the city of Baltimore honored Edgar Allan Poe with the dedication of a marble monument at Westminster Burying Ground, marking the first major public recognition of the writer’s literary legacy. Initiated largely through the efforts of Baltimore schoolteacher Sara Sigourney Rice and funded in part by small donations from public schoolchildren, the monument was erected to replace Poe’s neglected original grave marker and to elevate his status as a respected figure in American literature. The dedication ceremony drew notable attendees, including Poe’s relatives and literary admirers, and featured speeches and readings that acknowledged both his genius and the tragic circumstances of his life and death. Poe’s remains were exhumed and reinterred at a more prominent spot near the cemetery’s entrance, beneath the new monument—a white marble obelisk bearing his portrait and dates. The event symbolized a turning point in how Poe was remembered, shifting from scandal and mystery toward appreciation and literary immortality.
