1916 Quebec Bridge collapse disaster...

Item # 699623

September 11, 1916

EVENING TRIBUNE, San Diego, Sept. 11, 1916

* Quebec Bridge construction disaster
* St. Saint Lawrence River collapse

The front page has a nice banner headline in red lettering: "TWENTY-FIVE FALL TO DEATH" with subhead. (see images)
Surprisingly this issue is in good condition being from the "wood pulp" era. Very hard to find issues that are not totally fragile from this era. Rare as such.
Complete with 12 pages, a little irregular along the spine, generally nice.

wikipedia notes: On September 11, 1916, when the central span was being raised into position, it fell into the river, killing several workers. The chief engineer was made aware of the problem six weeks before the collapse. The chief engineer had been alerted to a problem by Frants Lichtenberg, the engineer responsible for the construction of the centre section. Lichtenberg was also working as an inspector for the federal government of Canada at the time. Fears of German sabotage were reported because the Great War had begun, but it became apparent that the central span had collapsed because of the failure of a casting in the erection equipment.
