Item # 698885

June 11, 1808

THE IMPERIAL WEEKLY GAZETTE, London, June 11, 1808

* Rare early 19th century publication

I don't know if this is a scarce title, but I'm surprised this is just the second issue we have encountered in our 49 years. Almost entirely political & financial reporting from England, no advertisements, red ink stamp in the masthead, 4 pages, very nice condition.

AI notes: The Imperial Weekly Gazette was a London Saturday newspaper launched in 1804, aimed at an upper-class readership and written from a broadly conservative standpoint, running until the mid-1820s. It blended domestic and foreign news with crime reports, parliamentary debates, religious and moral essays, and frequently carried opinionated editorials on its front page. In 1813 it absorbed the long-running Westminster Journal and appeared for a time as The Imperial Weekly Gazette and Westminster Journal, before shortening its title in 1823 to The Imperial Gazette, when it expanded from four to eight pages. Reflecting the political climate of the early 19th century, it often championed traditional values, covered scandals such as the controversies surrounding Queen Caroline, and positioned itself as a voice for conservative readers during a period of war with Napoleonic France and growing social reform movements at home.
