background: The Siege of Corinth in 1862 was a pivotal campaign in the Western Theater of the American Civil War, centered around the strategically vital railroad junction at Corinth, Mississippi. Following the bloody Battle of Shiloh in April, Union Major General Henry W. Halleck led a large force of approximately 100,000 men in a slow and deliberate advance toward the town, choosing siege tactics over direct assault to minimize casualties. For over a month, both Union and Confederate forces, commanded by General P.G.T. Beauregard, engaged in trench warfare and artillery exchanges, with the Union gradually encircling the town with fortified lines. The Confederates, faced with dwindling supplies and increasingly untenable positions, ultimately abandoned Corinth under the cover of night on May 29-30, 1862, retreating in good order. The Union occupation of Corinth secured a critical transportation hub, cutting vital Confederate supply lines and paving the way for further Union advances into the Deep South, marking a significant strategic victory with long-term implications for control of the Mississippi Valley.
