LOS ANGELES TIMES, June 5, 1996

* Lollie Winans & Julie Williams murder case
* Hikers killed in Shenandoah National Park in 1996
* The case remains unsolved

Page A13 has: "Murder Invades Idyllic World of Backpackers", with subheading: "Two women are killed on the Appalachian Trail Slaying are part of a growing trend of increasing violations of the law in the wilderness, national parks", followed by nearly 2 columns of text. See images for details regarding the deaths of Lollie Winans & Julie Williams and the increasing dangers of wilderness hiking.
Background: Two hikers were killed while hiking in the Shenandoah National Park not far from the Skyline Drive and the Appalachian Trail in 1996. Although many years later there were suspects (Richard Marc Evonitz and Darrell David Rice among them), no one was ever convicted in the double-murder case. These were just two in a series of murders in and around the area during a two-decade period along the Route 29 corridor in Virginia.

Note: DNA evidence eventually exonerated Rice, and Evonitz committed suicide after a long, cross-country high-speed chase - before an interrogation could be conducted or a confession made.
Other news of the day, sports, and advertising are also included.

The issue in very good condition and appears to be complete in multiple sections, however, it is being offered for the described content.
