WILKES' SPIRIT OF THE TIMES, New York, Sept. 10, 1859 It is subtitled in the masthead: "A Chronicle of the Turf, Field Sports, Literature and the Stage".
This is the very first issue, a break-away publication from Porter's Spirit of the Times which George Wilkes owned in partnership with William Porter. Porter died in 1858, the paper falling into the hands of a New York lawyer with whom Wilkes did not get along, so with this issue he established his own sporting newspaper.
Page 8 has his explanation for the creation of this publication headed: "To Our Readers", signed in type: Geo. Wilkes.
Sixteen pages, 11 by 15 1/4 inches, the front page is toned with light foxing inside as well, generally very nice condition.
