August 21, 1968
LIDOVA DEMOKRACIE, Prague, Czechoslovakia (now Czech Republic), Prague, Aug. 21, 1968 An extremely rare issue from this very significant day of the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia during the tumultuous days of 1968.
Warsaw Pact member countries, except Romania and Albania, were led by the Soviet Union to repress the reforms being pressed by the Czech people through the invasion of Czechoslovakia and the capital, Prague, on August 21, 1968 (the date of this issue). The invasion, chiefly by infantry and tanks, effectively suppressed any further attempts at reform. The military occupation of Czechoslovakia by the Red Army would end only in 1991.
The banner headline (translated) pleads: "To All The People of Czechoslovakia! Keep Calm and Balanced !"
This issue was saved by a collector friend from Germany, and included is a portion of his letter to me detailing his stay there at that time, and how he came by this newspaper.
Complete as a broadside (printed on one side only) single sheet, 12 1/2 by 18 1/2 inches, nice condition.
