The circus is coming to town! Cole Bros. and Clyde Beatty... 1940 (1935?)...

Item # 695746

July 18, 1940

* Cole Bros. Circus w/ animal trainer Clyde Beatty
* Great displayable item, some in color
* Gloversville, Fulton County, New York

This is an 8-page promotional piece for the "COLE BROS. CIRCUS" coming to Gloversville, New York, July 18, 1940 (see note below). The entire piece is a generic advertisement for the circus' tour for the year, customized only at the very bottom of the front page which has: "Gloversville - Thurs., July 18".

Complete in 8 pages, quite dramatic, pages 1, 4, 5 & 8 are in red & black ink, minimal margin wear, nice condition.

Note: While the year is not printed, the back page notes "War Tax Included", which would make the year either 1935 or 1940. At this point in the history of the Cole Bros. Circus, they were owned by a Canadian company. Year-long tours often covered both Canadian and U.S. towns. In 1935 Canada was adding a "war tax", and in 1940 the United States was doing the same. The fact that these are the only two years during the era when the circus used this name in which July 18 fell on a Thursday makes these two years the only possibilities for the date. Since we are not certain which of the two years are correct, instead of using 1935 which would make this the first tour where Clyde Beatty was a headliner with Cole Bros., so as to downplay the significance we used the latter possibility - 1940.
