June 05, 1858

SPIRIT OF THE TIMES, New York, June 5, 1858  It is subtitled in the masthead: "A Chronicle of the Turf, Field Sports, Literature and the Stage".
The front page has a report headed: "Base Ball Match" which notes: "One of the most exciting games at this National past time that has ever been played in Boston came off on Monday...on the Parade Ground of the Common & was witnessed by between 2000 and 3000 spectators. The match was between the Olympic Club of Boston and the Winthrop Club of Holliston, and consisted of 100 rallies. The subjoined is the score..." with the list of players.
Nice to have such an early baseball report on the front page.
Twelve pages, 12 3/4 by 18 inches, a sporting-themed engraving in the masthead, great condition.
